Reconstructive urology and andrology have traditionally evolved along parallel, yet often independent, trajectories. As the understanding of male urogenital health expands -encompassing functional, psychosexual, and reconstructive dimensions- the necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming increasingly evident. The forthcoming ESGURS-ESAU25 meeting, to be held on October 2–3, 2025, at the University of Turin, offers a timely forum to facilitate this convergence and to promote the advancement of integrated care models.
A central premise of the meeting is that surgical proficiency alone is no longer sufficient to meet the evolving demands of contemporary practice. Optimal care now requires the incorporation of patient-reported outcomes, advanced technological tools, ethical surgical training, and cultural sensitivity. ESGURS-ESAU25 is positioned to serve as a catalyst for this transition.
Hot topics in Turin
Over the past decade, the Sections of Reconstructive Urology and Andrology (formerly ESGURS and ESAU, respectively) within the European Association of Urology have significantly contributed to the dissemination of advanced surgical techniques for the management of urethral stricture disease, Peyronie’s disease, male stress urinary incontinence, and penile prosthesis implantation. This 2025 edition of their joint section meeting, however, seeks to broaden the scope of discussion beyond surgical techniques.
In the scientific programme, sessions addressing male infertility, hypogonadism, transgender surgery, penile aesthetics, and genitourinary survivorship reflect a deliberate effort to promote a more patient-centred, holistic approach to care. This interdisciplinary perspective aligns with trends observed in similar international educational initiatives.

Live Surgery
As in previous iterations, live surgery will remain a key feature of the congress. While concerns regarding patient safety, the potential for performance bias, and reproducibility are well documented, adherence to established ethical and technical guidelines (such as those outlined in the EAU Live Surgery Policy) ensures that live surgery can provide substantial educational value.

Live demonstrations uniquely allow participants to observe real-time surgical decision-making processes, which complements the technical insights typically provided through edited video presentations. Simultaneous expert commentary and moderated discussions will further enhance the educational experience. Nevertheless, further research is warranted to assess the long-term impact of live surgical training on clinical competence, beyond subjective measures of participant satisfaction.
Andro-urology
The evolving identity of andrology and reconstructive urology presents both challenges and opportunities. In Europe, these domains remain primarily embedded within urology, whereas in the United States they are increasingly conceptualised as distinct post-urological subspecialties with dedicated fellowship training. ESGURS-ESAU25 offers a platform to foster a cohesive professional identity within these fields. Key topics such as fertility preservation, testosterone therapy, and sexual rehabilitation after cancer will be addressed as integral components of male health. A dedicated session on the “aesthetic turn” in andrology, encompassing procedures such as penile lengthening and scrotal rejuvenation, will critically examine the legitimacy and implications of this emerging trend. Recognising sexual function as a core element of well-being, rather than an ancillary concern, is essential to comprehensive patient care.
The choice of Turin, a city renowned for its academic and medical traditions, as the host venue further underscores the congress’s role in bridging established practices with future innovations. The congress will be preceded by the ESU-ESAU-ESGURS Masterclass on Erectile Restoration and Peyronie’s Disease (October 1, 2025), providing additional opportunities for both theoretical and practical learning.
If ESGURS-ESAU25 achieves its objectives, it will not only disseminate new surgical techniques but will also contribute to shaping the future values, scope, and standards of andrology and reconstructive urology. The congress represents a valuable opportunity to redefine clinical priorities, promote interdisciplinary integration, and ensure that patient-centred outcomes remain at the forefront of clinical and academic efforts in this evolving field.
