Global (ES)GURS-ESAU24 meeting kicks off in Antwerp

For this year’s joint edition of this long-running series of meetings, the EAU Sections of Reconstruction and Andrology were joined by the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS), making this a global meeting.

Over the coming three days, around 450 participants will take part in the scientific meeting, which includes live surgery, plenary and poster sessions covering reconstructive and andrological topics. Additionally, largely running parallel to the meeting is the ESU-ESAU-ESGURS Masterclass on Erectile Restoration and Peyronie’s disease, which for the first time features a Hands-on Training component on Thursday.

More than 100 participants are from the Americas, a reflection of the GURS’s participation. Circa 300 participants are from Europe, but significant numbers from Africa, Asia and Australia as well. Welcoming participants on behalf of GURS, its chair Prof. Keith Rourke (Alberta, CA) reflected on the different definitions of “global” as applied to this meeting:

“We might sometimes be the only people in our practice or even country who can do what we do,” said Prof. Rourke. “So let’s all come together from across the globe. Also, diseases differ across the globe, we can talk about global pathologies and perspectives. Finally, ‘global’ as in perspective. Let’s keep an open mind, explore and collaborate. Let’s all learn something to take back home to our practices!”

Major topics that will be presented, discussed or otherwise moderated by internationally renowned experts are reconstructive urethral, penile and bladder surgery; male infertility, implants, sexual function, continence, managing complications, and a session on adolescent urology.

The day started with the first of several live surgery sessions: Female reconstruction.
